What Essential Oils are Good for Weight Loss

There are a few Essential Oils that are good for your weight loss goals.

  • Grapefruit
  • Ginger Root Co2
  • Cinnamon Leaf
  • Lemon
  • Turmeric
  • Peppermint

How to Use Essential Oils for Weight Loss

Essential Oils can curb your appetite and they support a healthy digestive system. These things together are important for you to shed those extra pounds especially if weight gain is due to age or a slow metabolism.  You can diffuse oils or apply them topically to your body.

  • When diffusing you should only diffuse between 30 minutes and 1 hour at a time – twice a day. Purchase a diffuser, there are many to choose from and then follow the directions on the diffuser and enjoy the benefits.
  • When applying topically to your skin – add essential oil to a carrier oil as most essential oils used directly on the skin without dilution can cause skin irritation. Grapefruit oil and Lemon oil – as well as most citrus oils can cause photo toxicity and you should avoid direct sunlight on the areas where you have applied the oil. Avoid sunlight directly on the area for 12 hours after application.
  • For aromatic use you can use a reed diffuser, put a few drops on a tissue and inhale throughout the day, use a necklace diffuser, or inhale directly from the bottle. (some oils can dry out mucous membranes so if you notice this reduce use)

My personal favorite is Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil. The citrus aroma is so sweet and fresh.  Therefore, you will smell this oil all through my home.

Grapefruit Oil

  • Boosts metabolism
  • Helps your body break down brown body fat.
  • Curbs your appetite
  • Stops Sugar Cravings – Just Inhale and Cravings go away.
  • Supports the cleansing and drainage of lymphatic glands. Which clears toxins from your body
  • Allows for better nutrient absorption in tissues and the bloodstream.
  • Stabilizes your blood sugar
  • Allows your body to use food for fuel instead of storing as fat
  • Excellent Diuretic – Rids your body of excess water weight
  • Reduce Cellulite – Mix with a Carrier Oil and Apply topically to cellulite area
  • Detoxes skin, Increases circulation where applied

The scent isn’t the only thing this oil is good for. This is the oil I am using for my weight loss goal. My goal is to lose 20 lbs and I have lost 4 lbs in just 6 days! To accomplish this I have been eating a grapefruit a day, cutting my carbs, diffusing the oil twice a day and applying Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil mixed with Coconut Carrier Oil right onto my stomach area. The scent is so enjoyable this is more like pampering myself than being a weight loss strategy.

Lemon                        Lemon Essential Oil

  • Bright and cheery invigorates your mood
  • Boosts energy levels
  • Reduces appetite
  • Improves neurological activity which promotes the breakdown of body fat

Cinnamon Leaf          cinnamon

  • Promotes healthy bacteria in the upper GI tract
  • Aides in digestion
  • Balance blood sugar levels – curbs sugar cravings
  • This one is quite strong and can dry out mucous membranes so use sparingly.

Turmeric Essential OilTurmeric

  • Aides in digestion
  • Warm Spicy scent
  • Apply with carrier oil directly to stomach area to aid with bloating, cramps, gas

  • Improves alertness – more energy for walks, workouts etc
  • Helps reduce cravings
  • Makes you feel fuller longer

Ginger Root CO2 Essential OilGinger Root CO2

  • Supports digestion

  • Apply topically with a carrier oil directly to stomach area (stay clear of the sun for a few hours – photo toxicity can occur)

Exercise – Essential Oils and their Benefits

Exercise is important and you don’t have to work out every day or go to the gym to add exercise into your routine. Simple choices like walking during your lunch hour or taking the stairs instead of the elevator can make a big difference. You can simply park your car at the end of the parking lot to add a few steps to your day.  Walking can increase your oxygen levels, give you more energy, relieve stress and help you to sleep at night. You may even meet new friends along the way and get talking as you walk.  Before you know it, you’ve gone an extra 1/4 mile.

Take your Peppermint Essential Oil along with you on your walk.  Simply inhale the scent straight from the bottle as you walk and if you feel some pain in your joints here and there, you can topically apply Peppermint Essential oil or Lavender Essential Oil to relieve the pain and continue on. Remember to add these oils to a carrier oil before applying.

Soothe Sore Muscles

Should you choose a work out routine to help you stay healthy there are Essential Oils that help to soothe sore muscles, and ease pain.

  • Black Pepper
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Marjoram
  • Peppermint
  • Lavender
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Geranium
  • Eucalyptus

Again, you can diffuse these or dilute them with a carrier oil and apply them directly to wherever your body hurts. There are many other essential oils that can relieve pain and soreness.  You can find them, as I mentioned earlier, in my PDF at the top of the page.

Stress Relief – Essential Oils 

Stress relief is another important part of your weight loss routine.  There are many essential oils that relieve stress – check out my PDF above.

  • Clary Sage

These are just a few. Relieving stress helps you to sleep at night, which is also an important factor for losing weight and maintaining your healthy weight.

Conclusion

Weight loss is a personal journey and for each of us it is different. No two people are the same and we all have different challenges. Maintaining your perfect weight is a lifetime commitment.  It can be difficult at times, therefore, many people reach their goals or start to reach toward their goals and fall backwards.  After doing this a few times they give up.  We need to change our lifestyle to maintain our healthy weight and essential oils are a great way to help curb your cravings, boost metabolism, and absorb nutrients from the foods you choose.

  1. Although I am not that need of losing weight, I know others who want. These oils can also be helpful with a bit of exercise here and there.

    Never heard of these names before. It’s because I have never looked into this method before. Can you you tell me or us how long it takes to loose weight if someone uses?

    I am actually curious because it’s something new for me. I guess you learn something new everyday or maybe I been living under rock?

      People tell me I live under a rock too so I totally get what you are saying.  I had never heard of putting the essential oils on my body to help melt fat yet I’ve been doing it along with cutting the carbs and the sweets and sure enough, little by little the weight is shedding.  I have not increased my exercise.  I walk about 8000 steps a day.  I cannot say how long it takes as it is different for each person.  You can google Grapefruit Essential Oil helps to melt fat and you will find many articles written on it.  I’m going to say this is a success and continue to go along this path.  Thank You for your comments and questions. 

  2. I have been reading about the link between essential oils and weight loss. The evidence are clear and I would like to give it a try. I like what cinnamon leaf has to offer. Thank you very much for showing how to use them. There are some misconceptions out there. Thanks for clarifying.

      Some of the contradictions are coming from using oils that are not top grade.  Make sure you purchase oils from the right sources.  There is more than one company that sells reputable oils.  Plant Therapy is the one I use.  And I can certainly tell the difference.

  4. hello, what an interesting topic. I love to use essential oils in my laundry, shower, diffuser, and meals. I did not consider using them for weight loss, but of course, that makes perfect sense because the oils are so good for so many other things. I am very happy that I have the opportunity to review your site. This is something I am going to research more.

  5. This is really enlightening for me. I did not know that essential oils can assist or enhance weight loss. I am having some and I am using them basically for the scent , I am definitely going to explore the weight loss aspect of the lemon and peppermint I am having. Oh yes I have to get the grapefruit also.

  6. Hello Connie, Thank you for this informative packed article you have shared with us here. I never new there essential oils could be used as weight loss remedy until now.

    since I gave birth to my twin my flat belly before pregnancy has now disappeared, and I find my self eating a lot too, your article has brought help I have been looking to me right in my home on laptop.

    Therefore I would go with pink grapefruit essential oil simply because it will help curb my appetite, boost my metabolism since am struggling with indigestion now for a while, and finally it also breaks down brown body fat, since am now plus size too.

  7. Hello, I am very happy to find essential oils for weight loss, that you can put on your body, I know of some like cinnamon,
    ginger roots, turmeric and a number of others that help with weight lost, but you have so many others and what and how they are used, I like that! I sure will look more into essential oils for weight loss, this is awesome!

    essential oils are awesome! I know of a few essential oils that is use for other things like indigestion and other problem,  weight loss, I never knew about that, but I will look into the the weight loss essential oils, like lemon and grapefruit and some others, these essential oils need to be used the right way?  because they are concentrated so I need to use them correctly? Great job I will look into it.

      Hello,  They do not need to be used right away – most have a shelf life if kept out of sunlight for over two years.  They are concentrated.  I use the grapefruit oil and I mix it with a carrier oil.  Does the trick for me.  Take Care and Best Wishes.

These oils are truly remarkable and is such a big part of my life , I use them especially for my skin. hair and gums. The weight loss factor is such a bonus I will start on it today

  11. I did not know that essential oils could help with weight loss. The benefits of Grapefruit oil are excellent. Stopping my sugar craving and boosting my metabolism is something that I could use.     I always thought that essential oils were only for aromatic purpose, but now and due tou your article my knowledge became richer!  In my sincere opinion I believe that they are a good solution to all of us that suffered with this pandemic lockdown, staying at home and having a sedentary lifestyle – the scales do not lie (I am not an exception…)!!!

    Undoubtly, my favourite is the Grapefruit Oil, a true winner. Well done Connie, you made me seriously think about it.

  13. Losing weight is one of the biggest struggles if you do not do it correctly. I have been advised by my health expert to take natural things and exercise regularly. I take supplements like the Hemp CBD oil for stress and muscle recovery. I do take essential oil for meditation but I never thought it can aid in weight loss. I like this post and will go for a few that can help in sore muscles and boost my energy levels so I can make the most of my workouts. Thanks.
