What is An Essential Oil – How do Essential Oils Work?

  • An Essential Oil is the Essence of the Plant. It comes from the leaves, flowers, stem and roots of the plant.
  • They are very powerful, full of fragrance and some have very strong medicinal properties.
  • They can assist with Physical, Emotional, Mental & Spiritual Health.
  • They are a fragrance to freshen your home or work area
  • Essential Oils can keep the air around you free of bacteria and germs

Essential Oils are the most powerful and potent part of the plants. The leaves, flowers, stem, and roots all may have medicinal or fragrant qualities yet it is the Oil extracted from the leaves, flowers, stem, & roots that packs the punch.

Every Essential Oil contains approximately 100 different components. Each of these components interact with our bodies, as we use these oils, in a different way. I am amazed to find out that our bodies and essential oils are made from many of the same components! That is one of the reasons our bodies absorb and use essential oils so readily. Another is that Essential Oils have a positive effect on Blood Circulation and carrying oxygen. While they are doing all of this great work, they can also help to eliminate toxins! No wonder I find these so interesting and they are my first choice for healing my body.

What is the Science of Essential Oils?

Here is the reason Essential Oils work so well for us.

SCENT – The Science behind Essential Oils starts with the fact that as humans, our sense of smell is one of our most powerful senses. What we smell goes directly to our brains to process very quickly. Different scents tell the brain to do different things. Should we smell a scent that makes the brain react using our hormones – that particular oil will help control weight loss, body temperature, stress, nervous system. If the scent is one that makes our brain release mental strain – we will feel tension release, muscles, release – our bodies will react to that smell and relax. A fragrance the brain interprets as a calming agent will help us to rest and sleep. It is amazing to think that scents can open up different parts of our brain and send signals from the brain to the areas that need attention. Yet if you would like to take the time to look this up in more depth you will find many publications that will thoroughly explain our bodies and how the different systems in our bodies benefit from the use of essential oils.

ABSORPTION – Essential oils absorb easily into our skin as plants and human cells are similar substances. They should not go directly on our skin – we should dilute using an oil – we call carrier oils. The carrier oil can be almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil or any similar pure oil as these are also beneficial to our bodies. Our bodies crave what the plants produce and therefor readily accept and take in the oils as we apply them to our skin. Once the oils are on our skin and absorbed they go directly into the blood stream to flow throughout our bodies to perform their wonderful tasks.

INHALATION – As we directly inhale an essential oil straight from the bottle or take in the oils by steam inhalation – the essence of the oils goes right to our respiratory system to assist with breathing, oxygen intake, circulation, opening airways, calming coughs, clearing congestion – making us feel so much better.

Essential Oils encompass the entire well-being of our bodies. They do not concentrate on only one way to heal us – They heal us emotionally and mentally, as well as physically, It is the combination that gives us the complete healing our bodies need.

In Conclusion – Essential Oils – Worth Giving a Try.

Since the first time I used an essential oil and right up to today –  I am happy I discovered these wonderful oils.

I have introduced them to my friends and family and I am proud to say they are being well-received.

An experience I just had today.  I gave a friend of mine a sample bottle of Ylang Ylang and Lavender I had blended together as she was telling me she was suffering from anxiety. She faithfully applied the oil blend twice each day. My friend was telling me she absolutely loved the way the blend smelled and she could tell the blend was helping her to stay grounded and not anxious. What she did not expect was this – Just this morning she woke up with a quite significant headache – and she thought – Not today – I have the grand children coming. She went about her morning ritual – trying to ignore the headache, applied the oil blend, as this had become a usual part of her morning routine. All of a sudden she realized her headache was gone.  –  Her thought was that this is quite unusual as they usually lasted quite a while throughout the day. After a  moment she remembered she had applied the oil blend about a half hour ago.  Could this have assisted in the headache going away? She called me up and we looked up lavender and ylang ylang.  Sure enough they have properties of pain relief and relaxation.  Both would have relieved her tension and her pain. We enjoyed discovering all the other great uses of Ylang Ylang and Lavender. Another first time user of essential oils that will be a user for life.
